Fly Fishing for Tarpon, Permit, Snook- Puerto Rico #88

ABout this Adventure

Location
The West Coast of Puerto Rico has many small fishing towns scattered along the shores.  These towns are full of everything that you might want or need while on a destination fishing trip.  Great food, cheap drinks, hospitals, pharmacies and more, and most is within walking distance. This lodge program is fresh and innovative and operates in the towns of Boquerón and Salinas while utilizing all of the convenience, safety and resources that are available there.Getting there
You will fly into the capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan, (SJU) from the continental US. Once you have arrived in San Juan, there are a couple ways to get to the lodge. We recommend taking a small plane with Capeair to Mayaguez where the lodge team will meet you and get you and your baggage to the lodge.  If you would rather take a tour of the countryside and avoid the small plane, a shuttle can be arranged. This can be arranged via chartered sprinter van and would take about 2 ½ hours.

Fishing day
Your day will begin with breakfast at the lodge with a buffet style service.  You will then connect with your guides and hop into their truck in order to trailer your skiff to the desired launch point for the day. You will travel 20-40 minutes on rural roads to the boat ramp that is closest to the desired fishing location for the day.  We love this program because you spend less time making long runs and being exposed to the elements on the water.

Tarpon is a primary target while in Puerto Rico.  You will be fishing from Maverick Technical poling skiffs with some of the best American guides that love the pursuit of Tarpon.  These fish behave differently than most Tarpon that we fish for, they tend to be less spooky and more willing to eat the fly.  The habitat is ideal for young and adult Tarpon.  Your morning might be spent casting to smaller 15-40 pound Juvenile fish, and then transition to large adult fish in the afternoons.

It does not matter what continent or country you are chasing Permit; they are almost never your friends and that is still true in Puerto Rico.  Permit will be pursued on foot often and occasionally from the boat on a series of pancake style flats and reefs. The clear water and unique habitat make Puerto Rico an amazing place to spend some time in the pursuit of these elusive targets.

Snook are another species that many anglers enjoying looking for while visiting these waters.  During the right tides and weather, the Snook fishing can provide some quality action that allows you to add some variety to your daily adventure.
